Jonesboro is located in Clayton County, of which it is the county seat, just south of Atlanta along Highway 41 in the Metro Atlanta Region of the state. Jonesboro is part of the Atlanta, Georgia metro area.
Many local residents claim that Jonesboro was Margaret Mitchell's inspiration for Tara, and other settings in "Gone with the Wind." Her grandfather was an early settler here and she often visited as a child.
