Madison is located in
Morgan County, of which it is the county seat, south of
Athens between
Atlanta and
Augusta along Interstate 20 near Lake Sinclair in the
Historic South Region of the state. Although the city lay directly in the path of Sherman's march, it was spared the destruction that so many southern cities experienced during the Civil War.
