Grady Memorial Hospital opened in 1892 for the purpose of providing medical care to the medically, under-served residents of this community. And from its earliest beginnings, Grady was operated by the City of Atlanta as a municipal hospital. The Authority built new hospital facilities in the 1950s, including a new Grady Memorial Hospital and the Hughes Spalding Pavilion, the first hospital to treat private-paying black patients. Today, the Health System, which employs more than 5,000 dedicated employees, is assisted by some 900 caring community volunteers. Grady also provides training for many aspiring healthcare workers. Through its teaching affiliates, the Emory University and Morehouse schools of medicine, Grady offers valuable learning experiences to some 900 medical residents who provide patient care under the supervision of clinical faculty. In addition, student nurses, technologists, pharmacists, social workers, and doctors receive clinical experience at Grady.
