Tallapoosa is located in Haralson County west of Atlanta along Highway 100 on the banks of the Tallapoosa River in the Mountains Region of the state. It is situated just east of the Alabama state line.
It was named for the Tallapoosa River, which was named for a Creek Indian term meaning "swift current".
