Thomson is located in
McDuffie County, of which it is the county seat, just west of
Augusta between Crawfordville and Martinez along Highway 278 near the Strom Thurmond Reservoir in the
Historic South Region of the state. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 6,594, a decrease of 268 since 1990.
Thomson is part of the Augusta-Aiken, Georgia-South Carolina metro area.
It was named after J. Edgar Thomson, surveyor for the Georgia Railroad. Well-known residents have included Blind Willie McTell, blues musician.
