Toccoa is located in Stephens County,of which it is the county seat, northeast of Atlanta along Highway 123 near the South Carolina state line in thr Mountains Region of the state. The Chattahoochee National Forest and Lake Hartwell are nearby.
Its name derives from a Cherokee term for "where the Catawbas lived". Toccoa was a 19th-century coaling station for the Atlanta to Charlotte Railroad.
