Washington is located in Wilkes County, of which it is the county seat, northwest of Augusta along Highway 78 near the Strom Thurmond Reservoir in the Historic South Region of the state. It was named after George Washington by Virginians who settled here. Washington was once the site of Fort Washington or Heard's Fort.
