Hapuna State Recreation Area |
This classic pocket beach is half a mile of white sand with rocks at either end of the curved shoreline. The surf can be rough from ground seas in the winter months, but the off-season is calm.
The gradual slope into the water is perfect for swimming, snorkeling or scuba diving. Getting in and out of the water around reefs can be difficult in rough weather due to ocean swells and coral cuts. But summers are warm and seas are calm.
You can jump into the water from rock cliffs at the southern end. Use of surf boards is restricted and there are no lifeguards. Cabins rented by the State Parks system are nearby, with other facilities and a snack bar.
Located between Mauna Kea Beach and Mauna Lani resorts off Hwy 19 north of Puako on the Kohala Coast.
