House of the Sun Visitor Center

Haleakala National Park

Located on Hwy 378 about 10 miles past the headquarters in Makawao. It is the only road into the area of the western rim, with its 36 miles of well-marked hiking and horseback riding trails.

The temperature is about 30 degrees cooler than sea level and the high altitude is a consideration for those with heart, respiratory and blood pressure problems. There are exhibits and interpretive panels detailing the park history.

Nature talks daily at 9:30, 10:30 and 11:30 in the summit building at Puu Uluala (Red Hill) shelter and overlook on the summit which has views of the other islands and is open 24 hours. The Visitors Center is open dawn to 3 daily.
