Lanai is 18 miles long and 13 miles wide. It is eight miles to the west of
Maui Island and nine miles south of
Molokai Island. James Dole bought the island in 1922 and turned it into a pineapple plantation. Castle & Cooke Inc are the corporate successors.
They are controlling limited growth and planned development as changes in the market ended the pineapple era. The main town is Lanai City with a population of about 2,400. This is the least visited of the major islands.
There are only 17 miles of paved roads and much of the landscape is abandoned pineapple fields. Mt Lanaihale is a dead volcano on the eastern part with a 3,370 foot peak. There is an airport south of Lanai City
Most roads outside Lanai City are not marked and many are unpaved. For info, contact Destination Lanai.
