This overlook is six miles above park headquarters. There is a view of the crater a short walk from the parking lot that has been described as surreal.

On rare occasions in late afternoon, a person's shadow can be projected on clouds in the crater and the image is surrounded by a rainbow. This phenomenon is called the Brocken effect, after a mountain in Germany.

"The Specter of the Brocken" is the local name for the phenomenon.
