Dr Harold Lynn is credited with introducing 10,000 exotic trees and plants to Hawaii. This 193 acre site, now owned by the
University of Hawaii at Manoa, has half of those species growing here. Related species are clustered in this mature, wooded garden.
Classrooms are on the site for studying Hawaiian ethnobotany and such plants as mountain apple, breadfruit, taro, do, and kukui, as well as cashew, cacao, papaya, betel nut, macadamia, jackfruit, calabashes and herbs and spices.
Inspiration Point has ferns, bromeliads, magnolias and bo trees like the one Buddha sat under when he received his enlighenment. There is a book and gift shop and a helpful staff with info on hikes, children's programs and one-day workshops.
It is open 9am to 3pm Monday through Saturday and a $1 donation is appreciated. Guided tours are offered by reservation Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Call for info.
