Makapuu Point

This point is a famous spot for taking pictures of Rabbit Island and the smaller Turtle Island just offshore. Makapuu Beach is just across from Sea Life Park and is a great place to cool out and picnic, but dangerous for swimming.

There are many military facilities in the area, including Mokapu USMC Base and the Makai Undersea Test Range. Sonar bouys are thought to ring sensitive facilities around islands. In addition, a manned submersible studies Loihi.

Loihi is an active seamount that is forming a new Hawaiian island. The active volcano is predicted to break the surface in about 1,000 years.

Makapuu Point is the promontory just beyond sea life park and Waimanalo on the southeast coast.
