Leahi Hospital |
Leahi Hospital was first established in 1900 by the Victoria Hospital Association and named the "Honolulu Home for the Incurables". After moving from "Chinatown" to Kaimuki in 1902, it was renamed Leahi Home in 1906.
As the community-based mental health centers became better established, responsibility for these inpatient psychiatric programs was transferred to the Department of Health in the mid-1980?s. Leahi Hospital continued to emphasize geriatric long-term care services to the point where the first clients were admitted to the Adult Day Health Center in the early 1990?s. Also located on the grounds of Leahi Hospital are an inpatient Hansen's Disease unit, Departments of Tropical Medicine and Medical Microbiology, Pharmacology, and the UH School of Medicine AIDS/HIV research center.
Leahi operates 192 beds and employs close to 310 employees. In fiscal year 2000, there were 31 TB admissions and 33 discharges, 89 long-term care admissions with 104 discharges.
