Paauilo is located in Hawaii County on the Hamakua Coast of the Hawaii the Big Island, between Honokaa and Laupahoehoe along Highway 19 near Ookala, the Hamakua Forest Reserve, Kalopa State Recreation Area, and Alakaha Point.
