Puako Petroglyph Park

This park is located off Hwy 19 Queen Kaahumanu Hwy at Mauna Lani Resort. To reach the carvings, take a right at the traffic circle to the Ritz-Carlton Mauna Lani Hotel and a next right at the golf course.

The Malama Trail that used to circle Hawaii in ancient days, has been cleared for less than a mile beyond the petroglyphs to afford access to the lava bed for viewing the ancient carvings of animals, canoes and people.

There is even an area where visitors can make a rubbing of petroglyph figures. Rubbing (or frottage) is produced by chalk or charcoal on paper or cloth over a bas relief image. The chalk hits the high spots and reproduces the image.
