Bettendorf is located in Scott County west of Davenport along U.S. Highway 67. It lies on the banks of the Mississippi River near Devil's Glen Park.

Bettendorf lies in the original Wisconsin Territory and was purchased from the Sac and Fox Indians in the historic Black Hawk Purchase of 1832. The area was opened to homesteaders in 1840.

The 1990 Census pegged Bettendorf's population at 28,132. There are 1,012 businesses operating in Bettendorf and 15,100 persons employed by firms in the city. The major occupations are managerial, professional and administrative; technical, sales and administrative support; and the service industry. Addressing the community's educational and cultural life, the Learning Campus is a partnership between the recently renovated Bettendorf Public Library Information Center and the new Family Museum of Arts & Science. The Bettendorf Park Band offers eight to ten concerts a year in Middle Park.

Bettendorf is part of the Davenport-Moline-Rock Island metro area.
