Prairie City Public Library, serving an area of 1,680 residents, has a collection of 6,900 books and periodicals; in addition, there are 480 CDs, records, cassettes and other audio materials.
Staffing consists of one employee, plus volunteers. Annual expenditures on the library collection total $6,600. Patrons make 3,400 visits annually, and check out materials 6,900 times. Forty-two percent of all check-outs are children's materials.
