Visible during your ascent on Highway 95 to White Bird summit north of
Riggins, the old road was considered an engineering feat in its day. By zigzagging 2900 feet across the mountain, it gained 429 feet in an elevation over 14 miles.
Convict labor helped construct the road. After completion, it was possible to drive from Boise to Grangeville in a mere thirteen hours. Paved in 1938, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
