The refuge is especially important as a nesting area for redhead ducks. It is also a nesting area for a variety of other waterbirds including a colony of white-faced ibises.
Public uses of the area include wildlife observation, study, and photography, as well as waterfowl hunting and limited upland game bird hunting. There are no developed public use facilities.
The area is located 10 miles NW of Preston.
