The forest administers the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness and a portion of the Hells Canyon Wilderness.
Elevations on the Forest range from 1500 feet in Hells Canyon to over 9,500 feet in parts of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. Summer temperatures can exceed 100 degrees F, while winter temperatures can drop to -40.
