St Maries (pronounced St Marys) is set at the confluence of the St Maries River and the "Shadowy St Joe River," the world's highest navigable waterway. Besides great fishing, the St Joe Wild and Scenic River is home to one of the largest populations of osprey in the western United States.

At the junction of Hwys 3 and 5 southeast of Coeur d'Alene, St Maries is the county seat of Benewah County.
