Winchester is a community on the business loop of US 95, ten miles west of
Craigmont in
Lewis County. In an early town meeting, the topic was naming their town. One of the men looked over to the corner where the men had left their firearms. He saw the majority of the guns were Winchester rifles. It became a town vote to use the name 'Winchester'.
In 1965 the town's lumber mill closed down. Parts of the mill can still be seen on the hill near the city water tower. The area developed the log pond into the centerpiece of a state park in 1967 after a land trade between the Idaho Fish and Game Department and Potlatch Forests, Inc.
