The town of Apple River is located in northwest Illinois in Jo Daviess County northwest of Freeport and about 20 miles east-northeast of Galena one mile south of the Wisconsin state line. It serves as the headquarters for Apple River Canyon State Park located just south of town on a fork of the Apple River. Other local attractions include the Apple Canyon Lake Golf Course.The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 436, an increase of 22 since 1990.
