Deerfield is located in
Lake County just north of
Chicago between
Lincolnshire and
Highland Park about 2 miles inland from
Lake Michigan. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 18,802, an increase of 1,475 since 1990.
The area was first settled in 1835 and by 1840 had become a township with the name of Leclair. "Deerfield" was selected as the town's permanent name about 1850.
