Eldorado is known as the "City of Daffodils" and is located in southeastern Illinois in
Saline County just north of the
Shawnee National Forest and northeast of
Harrisburg, the county seat.
The town, founded by Judge Samuel Elder and Joseph Read, was origianlly named "Elder-Reado". Railroad sign painters eventually altered the name to what it is today.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 4,431, a decrease of 105 since 1990.
