Galesburg Illinois

Home of Carl Sandburg

Galesburg, founded in 1837, is located in western Illinois in Knox County and is the county seat. It is situated south-southeast of Davenport, IA, and west-northwest of Peoria along Interstate 74 and U.S. 34.

The city lies in the fertile plain between the Mississippi River and the Illinois River, often referred to as the "Military Tract"--land ceded to veterans of the War of 1812 against the British.

Galesburg is home to Knox College and "Old Main," the last remaining original structure hosting the Abraham Lincoln-Stephen A. Douglas debates of 1858. In addition, Carl Sandburg, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and Lincoln biographer, called Galesburg home and his ashes lie beneath Remembrance Rock behind the family homestead.

Avid golfers will want to challenge 2.5-star Bunker Links Golf Course.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 32,791, a decrease of 739 since 1990.
