HWC was founded in 1962 as Loop College, and was placed in the heart of the downtown business district to serve Chicago's business community. It was renamed in 1987 to honor the late mayor.
Transfer-oriented liberal arts and sciences curricula as well as career and vocational programs are key ingredients for this diverse Community College. They enroll students from nearly 50 countries.
The College is part of the seven-member "City Colleges of Chicago" system that includes Kennedy-King College, Malcolm X College, Olive-Harvey College, Harry S Truman College, Richard J. Daley College and Wilbur Wright College.
