La Salle, established by
Sieur de La Salle in the early 18th century, is located in north central Illinois in
La Salle County about 50 miles northeast of
Peoria and 50 miles west of
Joliet at the intersection of
Interstate 39 and
Interstate 80 on the banks of the
Illinois River near
Goose Lake. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 9,526, a decrease of 191 since 1990.
Attractions include the Hegeler Carus Mansion, of second empire-style architecture built in 1874 and Lock #14 on the river which has been restored to its 1848 condition.
