Metropolis is located in southern Illinois in Massac County (of which it is the county seat) along Highway 45 on the banks of the Ohio River about 5 miles northwest of Paducah, KY.

Illinois' oldest state park, Fort Massac State Park, features a replica of the fort built in 1794. Other recreational facilities include Dorothy Miller Park.

The city has adopted the comic hero "Superman" as its favorite son and holds an annual celebration on the second weekend of June in his honor. An impressive 15' tall bronze statue of Superman overlooks the business district.

Robert F. Stroud, "The Birdman of Alcatraz", is buried in the Masonic Cemetary in Metropolis.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 6,870, an increase of 136 since 1990.
