Newton is located in southeastern Illinois in
Jasper County (of which it is the county seat) southeast of
Effingham. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 3,199, an increase of 45 since 1990.
Sam Parr State Park, just northeast of town, provides hunting, fishing and other recreational activities on 1,100 acres. In addition, 1,775-acre Newton Lake, Newton Lake SFWA and the Big Muddy River are southwest of town.
