This classic Greek Revival building, located in northwestern Illinois in
Jo Daviess County, served as a hub of community life during
Galena's most prosperous era (the mid-1800's). Locals selling produce filled the brick plaza with wagons and inside the main floor was divided into market stalls. Upstairs, the city council conducted business and in the cellar, prisoners were jailed. The 1998 renovation included new exhibits such as the historic city council chambers.
Owned and operated by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.
