Pontiac is located in central Illinois in
Livingston County (of which it is the county seat) about 30 miles northeast of
Bloomington and 50 miles east-northeast of
Peoria. It is on historic
Route 66 just east of
Interstate 55 on the banks of the
Vermilion River. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 11,440, an increase of 12 since 1990.
Several pre-1900 dwellings grace the town including the Catherine V. Yost Museum and the Jones House, an 1858 Gothic Revival brick structure that is the oldest of its kind in Pontiac.
The Humiston Woods Nature Preserve offers outdoor lovers a choice of six trails winding through prairies, creeks and woods. The glacially formed prairies are littered with wildflowers including lilies, mountain mints and shooting stars.
