The Tarble Arts Center's theme is "take the arts to the people." It comes under the auspices of the College of Arts & Humanities, Eastern Illinois University. The Center serves the people of the region by providing arts activities and related programs. Tarble Arts Center is the only facility on EIU's campus built entirely through private funding, with the primary donation a $1,000,000 gift given by the late Newton E. Tarble. Intended as a teaching collection, the Center's holdings are concentrated in contemporary 20th century Illinois folk arts with the museum owning more than 1,000 pieces. Among the interesting collections are the First Lady Doll Collection by Leta C. Whitacre and the Burl Ives Cane Collection.
