Grant by the town of Galena (in northwest Illinois in Jo Daviess County) at the successful conclusion of the Civil War in 1865. The structure is characterized by its low-pitched roof over a basically square frame with balconies over the covered porches. The home was used by the Grants until his election to the Presidency of the United States in 1868.
