West Frankfort is located in southern Illinois in southern Franklin County about 30 miles south of Mt. Vernon along Interstate 57 10 miles south of Rend Lake and 10 miles north of Marion which is considered to be the northern gateway to the Shawnee National Forest. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 8,249, a decrease of 277 since 1990.
