Woodlawn Cemetary |
The Woodlawn Cemetary was the location of the first organized Memorial Day (founded by Gen. Gen. John A. Logan) service in Illinois, and perhaps the first in the nation. On April 29, 1866, Woodlawn was the site of a service, honoring those who had died in the Civil War. There are over 20 Civil War soldiers buried in the cemetary.
Woodlawn Cemetary has been owned and maintained by the city of Carbondale since 1890. The wrought iron gate at the cemetary entrance actually came from Carbondale College, which was built in 1860.
