St Catherine Hospital |
St. Catherine Hospital opened on May 17, 1928. Founded by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, Ancilla Domini Sisters, the hospital was built on land donated by Colonel Walter J. Riley, a leading banker, and the Inland Steel Company.
Inland, along with a number of other organizations who comprised the East Chicago Manufacturer's Association, financed most of the construction under Colonel Riley's direction.
The hospital was named St. Catherine for a number of reasons. Katherine Kasper was the founder of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, the hospital's original sponsoring congregation. The head of the hospital of the American Province of the Order at that time was Sister M. Catherine. Catherine was also the name of Colonel Riley's mother.
Today, as a member of the Community Hospital System, the hospital continues to expand while providing a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic services to the people of Northwest Indiana.
