University of Notre Dame

This 1,250 acre main campus, was founded in 1842 on the site of an early mission. On the grounds is the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, built in the late 1800s. The ornate structure is adorned with gold and brass. Rich, detailed mural by the 19th century artist Luigi Gregori cover the walls and ceiling. Built in the shape of a Latin cross, the basilica includes a chancel and seven apsidal chapels, which contain relics and works of art.
