Valparaiso is located in Porter County (of which it is the county seat) east of Merrillville at the junction of Highways 30 and 2. Valparaiso has much to offer the casual visitor, including fine dining and entertainment throughout the downtown area, sports and recreation at any of the city's 16 parks, and art exhibits and concerts throughout the year. The Indiana Dunes State Park and Lake Michigan are only 20 miles north, and Chicago, Illinois is 50 miles west. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 25,931, an increase of 1,517 since 1990. Valparaiso is part of the Gary, Indiana metro area.
