Derry City, in
County Londonderry, goes back to the 6th century and has the distinction of being the only completely walled city in the British Isles. Located at the mouth of Lough Foyle, its access to the
Atlantic Ocean made Derry a strategic military base for foreign invaders. It was also a major embarkation point for the 18th-19th century emigrations to the western world.
