Founded:1871. Population: (2000) 469. Elevation: 2,155 feet. An incorporated city located in the Prairie Dog valley of Norton County. Almena is served by the Kyle and Neb.-Kan.-Colo. Railnet railroads and by Kansas Highway 383. The old brick Main street was laid in 1926. Mature shade trees along Main Street are conducive to walking. A shady city park beside highway K383 at the east edge of town and Bantam Park on Walnut Street has playground equipment for small children and picnic facilities. The first white man to live in the area was Mr. Ame Cole in 1859.
