Founded: 1884, Population: 301, Elevation: 2680 ft. Ingalls is located in the Southwest Region of the state, in Gray County. The Arkansas River runs west to east, north of town. The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe R. R tracked through Ingalls. The town is named for John J. Ingalls, then a US Senator from Kansas, who created the state motto Ad astra per asperaand wrote the poem "Opportunity".

Despite the danger, on the old Santa Fe Trail, the Middle Crossing, (Various points in the Cimarron-Ingalls area), was used the most.
