Kinsley

The "Midway City". 1561 miles to San Francisco and New York City.

Founded by emigrants from Massachusetts in 1873. Population (year 2000): 1,658, a loss of 217 since 1990. Elevation: 2,170 feet.

Kinsley is located in Edwards County (of which it is the county seat), and is northeast of Dodge City. Situated along US Highway 56 near the Arkansas River and Hain State Lake and Park.

Kinsley is on the Santa Fe trail near where it divides into the "Wet" and "Dry" routes. The army fought a battle against Indians near here at the 1848 battle of Coon Creek to protect this route. The soldiers used "new-fangled" breechloading rifles to defeat the attacking Indians; this seems to be the first use of breechloaders in combat by United States troops.
