Leawood is located in Johnson County east of Overland Park. A suburban community and part of the Kansas City, Missouri-Kansas metro area Leawood covers 14.7 square miles and resembles an elongated rectangle running north/south. Interstate-435 and the K-150 highway corridor both cross through the City, I-435 just north and K-150 just south of the center of the community. Leawood is bordered on three sides by the cities of Overland Park and Prairie Village, Kansas, and on the fourth by Kansas City, Missouri.

To quote the Mayor of Leawood, Kansas, Peggy J. Dunn; "Incorporated as a municipality in 1948, Leawood quickly became known for its lovely residential neighborhoods, beautiful parks and superior schools. As the City has developed into a more diversified community of residential, retail and office development, the desire to "grow with distinction" has remained the primary focus of the Leawood Governing Body".
