Manhattan, a pleasant, tree-shaded city, is located in Riley County (of which it is the county seat) northwest of Topeka and about 100 miles west of Kansas City via Interstate Highway 70.

Situated in the Flint Hills along US Highway 24 on the banks of the Kansas River near Fort Riley Military Reservation and Tuttle Creek State Park & Lake. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 41,318, a decrease of 1,763 since 1990.

Located in the northeastern part of the state, the city was founded in 1855 by a group of riverboat traders. Today, Manhattan is the trade and cultural center of a five-county area.

Heart of America Shakespeare Festival Kansas City MO June18-July7 The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival is set under the stars in South Moreland Park near Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. It is a perfect way to spend a summer evening with family and friends. They have several programs to study and explore such as Speaker's Bureau and Poster and Sonnet Contest. The faculty includes theatre professionals, actors, and educators experienced in performing and teaching Shakespeare. Many of the instructors are veterans of festival productions.
