Manhattan, a pleasant, tree-shaded city, is located in Riley County (of which it is the county seat) northwest of Topeka and about 100 miles west of Kansas City via Interstate Highway 70.Situated in the Flint Hills along US Highway 24 on the banks of the Kansas River near Fort Riley Military Reservation and Tuttle Creek State Park & Lake. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 41,318, a decrease of 1,763 since 1990. Located in the northeastern part of the state, the city was founded in 1855 by a group of riverboat traders. Today, Manhattan is the trade and cultural center of a five-county area.
