Merriam is located in Johnson County off of I-35 at Exits 228B or 229 near Kansas City. Merriam is part of the Kansas City, Missouri-Kansas metro area and has been a pioneer and a leader in the development of the entire Kansas City area. One of the oldest developed communities in Johnson County. The list of firsts for Merriam is not only impressive but it shows how crucial Merriam has been to the success of this region. Merriam was the site of the first Bell Telephone Office in Johnson County, 1908; the first high school, Shawnee Mission Rural, now Shawnee Mission North, 1922; the first public library, 1956; the first major park in Johnson County (Antioch), 1956; the first full service hospital, Shawnee Mission Medical Center, 1962.
