Montezuma Kansas |
Founded: 1887, Population: 966 (1997 est), Elevation: 2785 feet.
Montezuma is located in Gray County, on I-56. There are no major waterways nearby. This community is in the Cimarron River Drainage Basin. Founded during a period of intense land speculation, Montezuma competed for railroad access and status as the Gray County Seat, (it lost). The main industry is agriculture or agricultural-related businesses. There are over fifty businesses in the Montezuma area alone. Many of the settlers in the area around Montezuma were Mennonites seeking religious freedom.
The Stauth Memorial Museum, with exhibits from around the world, is a remarkable institution for a town of this size. Which also hosts traveling exhibits from the Smithsonian Institute, as well as displaying artifacts from the Stauth's extensive travels and Ralph Fry's wild game expeditions.
