Olathe is located in Johnson County, (of which it is the county seat). Olathe is southeast of Lawrence along Interstate 35 and near Kansas City. Olathe is part of the Kansas City, Missouri-Kansas metro area.

Olathe is the second largest among the 21 communities in prosperous Johnson County, and the fifth largest city in the state.

Outdoor recreation offers a variety of activities, including bicycling, fishing, boating, team sports. The Olathe area is popular for hot-air ballooning and sailboarding and has two public lakes: Olathe Lake with 172 acres of water surface, and Cedar Lake with 45 acres.

Heart of America Shakespeare Festival Kansas City MO June18-July7 The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival is set under the stars in South Moreland Park near Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. It is a perfect way to spend a summer evening with family and friends. They have several programs to study and explore such as Speaker's Bureau and Poster and Sonnet Contest. The faculty includes theatre professionals, actors, and educators experienced in performing and teaching Shakespeare. Many of the instructors are veterans of festival productions.
