Named Russell in memory of Avrah P. Russell, Captain, Company K, Second Kansas Cavalry. Russell was founded in 1872, Population: (2000) 4,696, Elevation: 1,826 feet. Located in
Russell County (of which it is the county seat) and east of
Hays City along Highway 40. The town is near the
Saline River and
Wilson Lake.
Special Events in Russell County;
- The Russell County Free Fair is held every summer at the Russell County 4-H Fairgrounds in Russell.
- Russell Main Street sponsors Christmas Fest which includes a lighted parade.
